Central Coast Geology — Coal Measures, Sandstone, and Coastal Wetlands

The Central Coast sits on the northern edge of the Sydney Basin, where Hawkesbury Sandstone and the underlying Newcastle Coal Measures intersect. The Gosford area is underlain by Gosford Sandstone — a younger, less well-cemented sandstone than Hawkesbury that is generally easier to excavate but still requires rock-cutting equipment for significant volumes. Wyong and the broader northern portion of the LGA transitions into Hunter Valley coal measure geology.

Coastal wetlands, estuaries, and tidal areas are significant features of the Central Coast landscape. Areas around Brisbane Water, Tuggerah Lake, and Lake Munmorah have very soft subgrade conditions and may involve acid sulfate soils — a particular consideration for any excavation within 2 metres of the natural water table in coastal lowlands. Central Coast Council Requirements

Central Coast Council (formed from the amalgamation of Gosford and Wyong councils in 2016) is processing a large backlog of DAs and has specific requirements for civil works under its Central Coast Development Control Plan 2022 (CCDCP 2022). Key requirements include ESCPs for earthworks above 100m³, acid sulfate soil management plans for coastal lowland sites, and stormwater quality treatment. Riparian corridor setbacks along waterways are enforced, and many Central Coast sites require Bush Fire Attack Level (BAL) assessment. Do you assess for acid sulfate soils on the Central Coast?

Yes. Acid sulfate soils (ASS) are present in coastal lowland areas of the Central Coast, particularly around Tuggerah Lake and the lake systems north of Wyong. We check ASS mapping as part of site assessment and can manage ASS in accordance with the NSW Acid Sulfate Soils Manual where required.

Is Gosford Sandstone harder than Sydney sandstone?

Generally softer. Gosford Sandstone is a younger formation than Hawkesbury Sandstone and is typically less well-cemented and more friable. This usually makes rock excavation faster and cheaper on the Central Coast than on Sydney Basin ridgeline sites.

How quickly can you mobilise to the Central Coast?

Approximately 1.5–2 hours from Castle Hill via the F3/M1. For larger projects, we mobilise within 2–3 business days. Day trips for site inspections and smaller jobs are practical.

Do you work in the coastal national park buffer areas on the Central Coast?

We work on development sites adjacent to national parks but not within them. We are experienced with the BAL assessment and vegetation clearing restrictions that apply to sites near national park boundaries.
