Rear yards accessible only through a standard gate, basement excavations on terrace house blocks, pool excavations on steeply sloped blocks with side passage access — these are everyday challenges for experienced Sydney civil contractors. Here’s how tight access excavation works and what it costs.
What Is Tight Access Excavation?
Tight access excavation refers to any excavation job where standard-size plant cannot access the work area due to physical constraints — narrow gateways, low overhead clearance, steep driveways, soft ground, or proximity to structures. It requires the use of compact or mini excavators (1.5t to 8t), specialised attachments, and operators experienced in working in confined spaces without damaging surrounding structures, fences, and vegetation.
The Plant We Use for Tight Access
1.5t Micro Excavator
Width: 850mm at tracks. This is the smallest effective rock-breaking machine. It fits through a standard single gate (900mm clear opening), can access rear yards via most side passages, and has a zero-swing tail that allows it to work within centimetres of walls and fences. The trade-off: slower production rate than larger machines. For a sandstone pool excavation, a job that takes one day with a 5t machine may take 3–4 days with a 1.5t — this is reflected in the price.
2t–3.5t Compact Excavator
Width: 980mm–1,400mm. More productive than the 1.5t, these machines require a wider gate (double panel, minimum 1.2m) or vehicle access around the side of the house. Good for most standard residential tight-access jobs where the access route is clear but restricted. Can carry a full rock breaker and work efficiently in soft-to-moderate sandstone.
5t–8t Excavator
Width: 1.8m–2.2m. Standard compact excavator, the workhorse of urban Sydney excavation. Fits through a double garage opening, can access most residential rear yards if the driveway allows, and is productive in moderate to hard sandstone. Most Sydney pool excavations and residential site preparations are completed with a 5t–8t machine.
How We Assess Tight Access Sites
Before quoting a tight access job, we visit the site to assess:
- Gate width and height — can the machine pass through without removal?
- Side passage width and length — is there enough room to track the machine through and manoeuvre in the work area?
- Overhead clearance — power lines, pergolas, and roof overhangs constrain machine height
- Driveway condition and slope — can the machine travel up or down the driveway safely? What is the bearing capacity of the driveway surface?
- Work area dimensions — once in, can the machine manoeuvre enough to complete the job efficiently?
- Spoil removal route — how does the broken rock get from the work area to the truck? Can a tipper access the property, or does spoil need to be transported by mini-dumper or wheelbarrow?
Tight Access Excavation Costs in Sydney
Tight access work costs more than open-access work because smaller plant is slower, and the physical constraints of the site increase risk and time. Typical cost impacts:
- 1.5t machine day rate: $950–$1,800/day (including operator and fuel)
- 3.5t machine day rate: $1,100–$2,000/day
- 5t machine day rate: $1,200–$2,300/day
- Mini-dumper for spoil transport within site: $300–$600/day additional if required
- Gate or fence removal and reinstatement: $300–$1,200 depending on type
A tight access pool excavation that would cost $7,000 with good access might cost $11,000–$15,000 with 1.5t plant and difficult spoil removal. This is not a contractor margin — it’s the real cost of doing the job safely and slowly with the right equipment.
Common Tight Access Questions
Can you go through a standard side gate?
Our 1.5t machine is 850mm wide — it can pass through a standard single gate panel with a clear opening of 900mm or more. For anything narrower, we may need to temporarily remove a gate post or fence section to gain access.
What if there’s absolutely no vehicle access to the rear yard?
In rare cases — fully fenced urban blocks with no side access — excavation requires manual breaking (pneumatic tools, rotary hammers) and wheelbarrow spoil removal. This is significantly slower and more expensive but is sometimes the only option. We assess this during the site visit and recommend the most cost-effective approach.
Can you protect my concrete driveway from damage?
We use rubber tracks on all compact machines and can place timber or rubber matting on sensitive surfaces. For steep driveways, we assess the bearing capacity and slope before committing to machine access. Some driveways are not suitable for machine access regardless of surface protection — we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case.
